According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla China saw a significant decrease in its sales of China-made vehicles in December. The company sold 55,796 wholesale vehicles in the month, a drop of 44.37% from November’s figure of 100,291 and a decrease of 21.24% compared to the 70,847 vehicles sold in the same month the previous year. It is currently unclear how many of these wholesale sales were deliveries within China and how many were exports from Tesla’s Shanghai plant.
In the latest quarter, Tesla’s factory in Shanghai, which produces both the Model 3 sedan and the Model Y crossover, contributed significantly to the company’s global sales. In addition to serving as an export hub, the factory also supplies vehicles for local consumption.
According to figures released on January 2, Tesla sold 227,791 China-made vehicles in the fourth quarter, an increase of 27.90% from the same period the previous year and a 20.96% increase from the 188,317 vehicles sold in the third quarter.
Overall, Tesla delivered 405,278 vehicles worldwide in the fourth quarter, falling short of market expectations of 420,800 units. China-made Tesla vehicles made up 56.21% of the company’s global deliveries in the fourth quarter, compared to 54.77% in the third quarter and 44.20% in the second quarter.
According to data from CnEVPost, Tesla China’s sales of domestically produced vehicles for the full year of 2022 reached 710,865 units, a 50.26% increase from the 473,078 units sold in 2021.
The China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) reported that wholesale sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China reached 730,000 units in December, a slight increase of 0.4% from the previous month and a year-on-year increase of 45%.
The CPCA predicts that wholesale sales of new energy passenger vehicles in 2022 will reach 6.49 million units, a significant increase of 96% from the 3.31 million units sold in 2021. Among the top performers in December, BYD had the highest wholesale sales at 234,598 units, followed by SAIC-GM-Wuling at 85,632 units, with Tesla China coming in third.
