The Tesla Model 3 has crossed three million units in global sales since production began in 2017, Tesla China said in a post on social media platform Weibo. The milestone underscores the sedan’s status as one of the most popular electric vehicles (EVs) worldwide, with the company noting that a new Model 3 is delivered approximately every 90 seconds.
First introduced in 2016 as part of Tesla’s strategy to offer a more affordable electric car, the Model 3 has maintained its position as the world’s top-selling battery electric sedan for seven consecutive years, according to Tesla China.
The company is currently offering financing incentives in China, with zero-interest plans for five years and monthly payments starting from RMB 2,460. In the U.S., Tesla is running a 0% APR offer for up to 60 months on the Model 3, contingent on the purchase of the Full Self-Driving (FSD) package.
Tesla has made several updates to the Model 3 since its launch, with the latest “Highland” version featuring design refinements including streamlined headlights and a sleeker front fascia. The improvements have also yielded modest gains in aerodynamic efficiency and driving range.
In China, Tesla has recently introduced the Model 3 Plus, equipped with a higher-capacity nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery supplied by LG, aimed at further extending range. The announcement coincided with the debut of the Model Y L, a three-row version of the company’s crossover.
