Tesla has officially launched the Model Y L in the United States and Puerto Rico, introducing a stretched, three-row version of its best-selling electric SUV with seating for six passengers.
The new model is now available to configure online and debuts exclusively as a fully equipped Launch Series priced from US$61,990.
Longer Wheelbase Adds Third Row
The Model Y L is built on an extended platform that increases the wheelbase by 150 mm (5.9 inches) to 3,040 mm, while overall vehicle length grows by approximately 180 mm (7 inches).
The additional space allows Tesla to introduce a 2+2+2 seating configuration with six individual seats instead of the optional seven-seat layout previously offered in the standard Model Y.
The second row features captain’s chairs with heating, ventilation, powered armrests, and one-touch folding. The third row includes heated seats, power reclining functions, and child-seat anchor points designed to improve practicality for family use.
Performance and Technology
Tesla estimates the Model Y L can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds while delivering an EPA-estimated driving range of 325 miles.
The SUV offers 89 cubic feet of cargo capacity and comes equipped with adaptive suspension damping, staggered tires, upgraded acoustic glass, a 19-speaker premium audio system, an 8-inch touchscreen for second-row passengers, and 50W ventilated wireless charging pads.
The vehicle also includes Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system together with integrated Grok AI functionality.
Tesla first introduced the Model Y L internationally in 2025, with the model initially launching in China before expanding to Australia, New Zealand, and several Southeast Asian markets. Prototype testing in the United States earlier this year had signaled an American launch.
Premium Pricing
The U.S. Launch Series enters the market at a significantly higher price than many analysts had expected.
The Model Y L first went on sale in China with a starting price equivalent to approximately US$47,000, leading many observers to anticipate a U.S. price closer to US$54,000.
Instead, Tesla has positioned the initial Launch Series at US$61,990, approximately US$4,000 above the Model Y Performance and roughly US$22,000 more than the entry-level rear-wheel-drive Model Y.
Tesla has previously used a similar strategy by launching premium “Launch Series” variants before introducing lower-priced versions at a later date.
Competing in the Three-Row EV Segment
The Model Y L enters an increasingly competitive market for electric three-row family SUVs.
The Kia EV9 starts at US$54,900 and offers up to 304 miles of driving range, while the Hyundai Ioniq 9 begins at US$58,955 with a maximum estimated range of 335 miles.
Although both competitors are priced below the initial Model Y L Launch Series, Tesla offers quicker acceleration and strengthens its lineup with its first Model Y variant specifically designed to provide comfortable seating for six adults.
The launch also fills a gap in Tesla’s product range after earlier seven-seat versions of the standard Model Y offered limited third-row space, making the Model Y L the company’s first purpose-built three-row SUV based on the Model Y platform.
