Tesla is preparing to update its Model S and Model X later this year, Lars Moravy, Vice President of Vehicle Engineering, suggested in a recent podcast appearance. While details remain scarce, the updates may incorporate some of the changes introduced with the refreshed Model 3 and Model Y.
Speaking on Ryan McCaffrey’s “Ride the Lightning” podcast, Moravy dismissed speculation that Tesla might discontinue the two luxury models, stating, “They are not going anywhere anytime soon.” He added that the Model S and Model X would receive “some love later this year,” without elaborating on the extent of the planned revisions. This has led to speculation about whether the updates will be a comprehensive redesign or limited to features such as ambient lighting and a front-facing camera, as seen in the recent Model Y refresh.

The last significant update for the Model S and Model X came in 2021, when Tesla introduced a new battery pack, a tri-motor Plaid variant, and an updated computer architecture. The interior saw the addition of a yoke steering wheel, but exterior design changes were minimal compared to the recent redesigns of the Model 3 and Model Y.
Tesla does not separately report sales of the Model S and Model X, instead grouping them with the Cybertruck in its “Other models” category. In 2024, the company produced 94,105 units in this category, compared to nearly 1.7 million Model 3 and Model Y vehicles. The combined Model S and Model X production fell short of Tesla’s earlier annual target of 100,000 units, a goal set during the 2021 refresh.

In February, Tesla raised prices for both the Model S and Model X while reinstating free Supercharging, an incentive that CEO Elon Musk had previously ruled out. However, the price increases may outweigh the savings from free charging for most customers.
