Tesla’s much-anticipated Cybertruck appears to be delivering on its claim to navigate water with a feature aptly named “Wade Mode.” The electric vehicle manufacturer asserts that this mode “pressurizes the battery pack,” allowing the pickup truck to traverse through water.
Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, has previously made unconventional claims about the ability of Tesla vehicles to float, even suggesting they could serve as makeshift boats. While such statements were not taken seriously in the past, the Cybertruck’s off-road focus seems to lend some credibility to Musk’s assertions.
Last year, Musk declared that the Cybertruck would be “waterproof enough” to briefly function as a boat, capable of crossing rivers, lakes, and even seas with moderate conditions. His ambitious vision included the Cybertruck navigating the waters between SpaceX’s Starbase and South Padre Island in Texas, covering a distance of approximately 360 meters (1,100 feet).
As the Cybertruck starts reaching customers, the inclusion of “Wade Mode” in the Off-Road Mode settings is garnering attention. According to Tesla’s description, this mode not only “raises ride height” but also “pressurizes the battery when driving through water.” This innovative feature is particularly intriguing as it suggests Tesla has developed the capability to pressurize its typically sealed battery packs, potentially enhancing water resistance.
While this news sparks interest among enthusiasts, caution is advised until the specifics of Tesla’s warranty concerning water-related activities are clarified. The practical implications of the Cybertruck’s “Wade Mode” remain to be fully tested and validated.
