Tesla has reduced the starting price of its Model Y in India by 15%, marking the latest adjustment to the electric vehicle maker’s strategy in the country as it seeks to improve competitiveness and broaden its customer base.
The price reduction follows the recent introduction of the six-seat Model Y L variant and a restructuring of the Model Y lineup in India.
Tesla has lowered the price of the entry-level Premium Rear-Wheel Drive version to 5.089 million rupees (about €46,000), down from its launch price of 5.989 million rupees when the vehicle entered the Indian market in July 2025.
The move represents a reduction of 900,000 rupees, or approximately €8,100.
Model Y Moves Closer to Key Competitors
The revised pricing places the Model Y closer to competing premium electric SUVs in India.
Following the adjustment, the vehicle is now priced slightly below the BMW iX1 Long Wheelbase, which starts at 5.140 million rupees and was India’s best-selling luxury electric vehicle last year.
Unlike Tesla’s imported Model Y, the BMW model is assembled locally using imported knocked-down kits, allowing it to benefit from a different cost structure.
Tesla continues to import the Model Y into India from China as a completely built unit (CBU), making it subject to relatively high import duties.
Lineup Simplified
Tesla has also revised the Model Y variant structure in India.
The company has discontinued the Premium Long-Range Rear-Wheel Drive version, narrowing customer choices within the lineup.
The six-seat Model Y L Premium Long-Range All-Wheel Drive now serves as the primary option for buyers seeking longer driving range and enhanced performance.
The Model Y L was introduced earlier this year with a focus on customers requiring additional seating capacity.
Tesla had previously positioned the six-seat variant below the Premium Long-Range Rear-Wheel Drive model, an unusual pricing structure compared with other global markets.
Product Updates Included
Alongside the price reduction, Tesla has updated equipment in the entry-level Model Y.
The company replaced the vehicle’s 15.4-inch touchscreen infotainment display with a larger 16-inch unit.
No other major specification changes were announced.
Expanding Retail Presence
The latest pricing adjustment comes as Tesla continues to expand its retail and service network in India.
The company entered the market with a single showroom in Mumbai and has since added locations in Delhi, Gurugram and Bengaluru.
More recently, Tesla opened a delivery center and body shop in Hyderabad through a partnership with Pride Exclusive.
The expansion is part of Tesla’s efforts to increase brand visibility and improve customer support as it seeks to grow sales in the world’s third-largest automobile market.
Seeking Greater Market Acceptance
Tesla’s launch pricing in India attracted criticism from some industry observers and consumers who viewed the imported vehicle as expensive relative to competing offerings.
The latest price cut represents the company’s most significant adjustment since entering the market and follows earlier efforts to reposition the Model Y lineup.
As competition intensifies in India’s premium electric vehicle segment, automakers are increasingly focusing on pricing, product positioning and customer experience to attract buyers.
Tesla’s revised strategy suggests the company is seeking to strengthen its foothold in a market where electric vehicle adoption continues to expand but remains highly price-sensitive.
