Tata Motors, an Indian car manufacturer, is looking for a location to build its European battery cell factory. The company is considering sites in either Spain or the United Kingdom.

In Spain, the preferred location is an industrial site in Zuera near Zaragoza, which was also considered by Volkswagen for its battery cell factory. Tata representatives have visited the Zuera site and started discussions with Spanish and Aragonese regional governments.

If Tata chooses this location, it may benefit from the PERTE eMobility support program in Spain. Tata is also building a battery cell factory in India, but details on the production volume and timeline have not been disclosed.

Tata Motors has sold 50,000 electric cars in India and plans to launch 10 electric models by 2026. The company expects electric cars to make up 25% of its total sales by 2025, up from the current 8%. Tata is not only active in the passenger car market but also the commercial vehicle market, with large electric bus orders recently announced through the Indian CESL promotion.

The electric car market in India is small, with electric models accounting for only 1% of the 3.8 million total car sales last year. Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, BYD, and MG Motors are among the manufacturers active or entering the market.
