Tesla’s brand reputation in the United Kingdom may be under strain due to CEO Elon Musk’s actions, with a new survey revealing a shift in consumer preferences toward electric vehicles (EVs) from Chinese manufacturers.
The study, conducted by EV advice platform Electrifying.com, surveyed 1,000 participants, including current EV owners and prospective buyers.

It found that 59% of respondents were deterred from considering Tesla vehicles because of Musk’s influence. Furthermore, 61% of current EV owners and 56% of potential buyers expressed openness to purchasing EVs from Chinese brands, according to a report in Car Dealer Magazine.
Electrifying.com founder Ginny Buckley commented on the findings, highlighting a significant change in consumer sentiment. “Tesla has played a pivotal role in accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles, but our research shows that Elon Musk’s personal involvement in the brand appears to be polarizing, pushing many buyers to look elsewhere,” she said. Buckley also noted the increasing competition in the EV market, citing technological advancements, competitive pricing, and new entrants as reshaping the industry.

Andy Palmer, former CEO of Aston Martin, echoed this view. “The Electrifying.com research is timely and shows just how influential Chinese brands are becoming. They are affordable and good quality. Not perfect, but they offer consumer choice at the right price point,” Palmer said. Regarding Musk’s impact on Tesla’s appeal, he added, “It is yet to be proven, but it does show that people now have enough choice to comfortably switch if they choose.”
