Stellantis plans to begin selling Chinese-branded electric vehicles in South Africa starting this September, with the launch of the C10 SUV from its partner Leapmotor, the company said on Tuesday.
The C10, a range-extended electric SUV equipped with a petrol engine that charges its battery, will be the first Leapmotor model introduced in the market. “More Leapmotor models are expected to be launched next year, including fully electric models,” said Mike Whitfield, managing director of Stellantis South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa, in a statement.

Leapmotor has gained international attention for its competitively priced EVs, including the all-electric B10 SUV, which features smart-driving technology and lidar sensors, offered for under $18,000. Stellantis acquired a 21% stake in Leapmotor in 2023 for $1.6 billion and later formed a joint venture called Leapmotor International, in which it holds a 51% controlling interest.
“South Africa is a critical market for Stellantis, and we are fully committed to unlocking its potential through product, innovation and meaningful partnerships,” Whitfield said.
Stellantis, which entered the South African market four years ago, is also constructing a local plant with a projected capacity of 100,000 vehicles annually by 2030. The automaker aims to become the leading player in the Middle East and Africa region, targeting one million vehicle sales by 2030, with 35% of those expected to be electric.

So far in 2024, Stellantis has sold 500,000 cars in the region. With over 60% of South Africa’s vehicle market priced below 400,000 rand ($22,755), the company said its Citroen C3 range is performing strongly. “The upcoming C3 Basalt will complete a competitive lineup in the accessible B-hatch and SUV segments early next year,” said Whitfield. He also noted Stellantis will launch the Citroen C3 Hola panel van, designed for small business customers seeking affordable commercial vehicles.
