The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility announced plans to install eight new fast electric vehicle (EV) charging stations along major highways, marking a pilot initiative to expand the countryâs EV infrastructure.
The new charging hubs will be located in Asturias, Barcelona, Cantabria, CĂłrdoba, Cuenca, Madrid, Valencia, and Zaragoza, with the first sites planned on disused land near rest stops, storage areas, or former tollbooths. Each station will include amenities such as cafes, restaurants, shops, parking spaces, toilets, and childrenâs playgrounds, aiming to improve the overall travel experience for EV drivers.
The specific planned locations are: La Caridad (Asturias) on the A-8, Penagos (Cantabria) on the A-8, Calatayud (Zaragoza) on the A-2, Montoro (Córdoba) on the A-4, Perales de Tajuña (Madrid) on the A-3, Saelices (Cuenca) on the A-3, Algemesà (Valencia) on the AP-7, and La Roca del Vallés (Barcelona) on the AP-7.
The initiative is described as a pilot project designed to âcatalyse private investment in electric charging infrastructure by providing a stable framework for the installation and operation of charging points,â according to a ministry statement.
Construction approvals have been granted for four of the locations: Montoro, AlgemesĂ, Perales de Tajuña, and Penagos. Spainâs General Directorate of Roads is also exploring opportunities for similar projects in the future.
Significant budgets have been allocated for these sites, including âŹ16.3 million for Montoro, âŹ15.9 million for AlgemesĂ, âŹ6.7 million for Perales de Tajuña, and âŹ11.2 million for Penagos, with preparations already underway at these locations.
