Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued a tender to procure 660 electric buses, aiming to more than double the country’s fleet of battery-powered public transport vehicles by the end of 2027.
The tender includes 360 single-deck and 300 double-decker buses, according to local media reports. To qualify, vehicles must meet stringent safety and operational requirements, including an automatic fire suppression system, a collision detection system, and passenger information displays.

The fire suppression system is designed to detect and extinguish fires while triggering an audio and visual alarm for the driver and automatically slowing the vehicle to move safely to the side of the road, LTA stated on the government procurement portal GeBiz.
This initiative follows Singapore’s broader push for cleaner public transport. From January 2026, the government will offer incentives of 40,000 Singapore dollars (about 28,000 euros) for each newly registered electric commercial vehicle, including electric buses. The incentive scheme will run until the end of 2028.

Currently, Singapore operates around 5,800 public buses, of which 480 are electric. The addition of 660 new vehicles would bring the total to 1,140. In 2023, LTA placed an order for 360 electric buses from China’s BYD and Zhongtong Bus, with deliveries expected by the end of 2024.
LTA said on social media that it plans to procure 2,000 electric buses over the next five years, aligning with Singapore’s goal of achieving a 100% cleaner energy public bus fleet by 2040. The latest tender remains open until May 22.
