Scania has secured an order for 105 battery-electric trucks from Swedish logistics specialist Wibax in what is being described as the European Union’s largest electric truck deal for bulk transport operations to date.
The agreement marks a significant step in the electrification of heavy-duty freight transport and will make Wibax one of the largest operators of battery-electric trucks in the Nordic region.
Major Milestone for Heavy-Duty Electrification
Wibax, which specializes in transporting bio-oils and liquid chemicals across Sweden and Finland, has identified battery-electric trucks as the preferred long-term solution for a substantial portion of its logistics operations.
The company operates a fleet serving industrial customers and believes that heavy-duty routes involving relatively short and repetitive journeys are particularly well suited to battery-electric technology.
The latest order forms part of Wibax’s broader strategy to reduce emissions while maintaining operational efficiency across its transport network.
Partnership Builds on Earlier Pilot Programme
The agreement follows several years of collaboration between Wibax and Scania.
In 2022, Wibax participated in a Scania pilot project aimed at testing battery-electric truck combinations exceeding 60 tonnes in gross vehicle weight.
As part of the initiative, Wibax operated a three-axle Scania electric tractor-trailer combination on an 80-kilometre route between Piteå and Skellefteå in northern Sweden.
The pilot vehicle carried approximately 300 kWh of battery capacity and was supported by a 150 kW charging solution supplied by energy company Skellefteå Kraft.
Scania described the pilot vehicles as customized solutions developed through close cooperation with customers and industry partners.
Beyond Vehicle Deliveries
The agreement extends beyond the supply of trucks and includes a range of services designed to support Wibax’s large-scale transition to electric transport.
According to Scania, the package includes charging infrastructure solutions, solar energy generation options and new business models aimed at lowering total operating costs.
The company said the integrated approach is intended to help Wibax expand its electric fleet while maintaining high levels of reliability and operational performance.
Long-Term Strategic Partnership
Wibax Group Chief Executive Officer Jonas Wiklund said Scania’s long-term commitment to electrification played an important role in the company’s decision.
“We need to work with a supplier with whom we can work with strategically and for the long-term, and that’s Scania.”
“We want to electrify our fleet quickly, and with Scania we can ensure that we introduce the new technology as quickly as possible to be able to achieve electrification in the timeline we have set out.”
Wiklund added that battery-electric vehicles are expected to become the most efficient solution for many of the company’s transport operations.
“We believe that in the long-term electrification will be more effective for the heavy, relatively short and repetitive transports that are the core part of our logistics.”
Confidence in Electric Heavy-Duty Transport
Tobias Ejderhamn, Head of Global Sales for e-truck solutions at Scania, said the agreement demonstrates growing confidence in battery-electric vehicles for demanding commercial applications.
“We are delighted to sign this landmark agreement with Wibax, who share Scania’s goals of decarbonising transport in combination with enhanced operational efficiency.”
“We see this as proof of Wibax’s confidence in Scania as a trusted partner for the scaling up of its eMobility operations.”
Ejderhamn added that the order highlights the increasing role of battery-electric trucks in helping fleet operators prepare for future emissions regulations while improving sustainability performance.
The transaction represents one of the largest electric truck deployments announced in Europe and reflects the growing momentum behind the electrification of heavy-duty freight transport across the region.
