Scania has launched a new business unit, Scania Industrial Batteries, to strengthen its electrification push in industrial off-road applications such as mining, construction and material handling.
The move follows Scania’s acquisition and carve-out of Northvolt Systems’ Industrial Division in April 2025, enabling the Swedish transport solutions company to deliver fully integrated electric systems to global customers.
Scania said the new unit will offer battery systems, electric motors, software, connectivity and support services. Two product platforms, Core and Compact, provide modular battery packs ranging from 21 to 624 kilowatt-hours and up to 1,000 volts, either as complete powertrains or standalone systems manufactured in Europe.
“The industrial segment is facing increasing demand for electrification, and batteries are becoming critical systems for performance, efficiency and uptime,” said Elin Åkerström, CEO of Scania Industrial Batteries.
The company noted growing demand for electric machinery in energy-intensive industries, citing benefits such as reduced emissions and lower energy costs. The modular design supports integration into equipment from forklifts to excavators, with manufacturing in Gdańsk, Poland, and research and development in Stockholm.
Gustaf Sundell, Executive Vice President and Head of Ventures and New Business at Scania, said the division will combine agility with engineering expertise to accelerate the shift to electrification in off-road sectors.
Scania has more than seven years of experience in battery development, delivering thousands of systems with over 12 million operating hours in mining, construction and agriculture. The company said the expansion underscores its ambition to provide durable, high-capacity solutions in demanding environments.
As part of the Traton Group, Scania delivered 96,443 trucks, 5,626 buses and 11,170 industrial and marine power systems in 2024, generating net sales of more than 216 billion Swedish crowns ($19.4 billion). Services accounted for about 20% of the total.
