Rivian said its upcoming R2 electric SUV has entered final validation testing, marking the last major development phase before production ramps up and customer deliveries begin later this year.
The company confirmed on Monday that validation vehicles are now undergoing intensive real-world testing, following the completion of Manufacturing Validation Builds in January. Rivian said those builds demonstrated that its factory in Normal, Illinois, and the newly expanded R2 production line were ready to support production-intent vehicles.

Rivian first disclosed on Jan. 16, 2026, that Manufacturing Validation Builds of the R2 were rolling off the line, signaling a transition from prototype development to vehicles suitable for full durability and reliability testing. Since then, the company said the validation fleet has accumulated tens of thousands of miles per vehicle.
Testing has taken place across a wide range of environments, including extreme cold of minus 45 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 43 degrees Celsius) in Alaska and desert heat reaching 122 degrees Fahrenheit (50 degrees Celsius). Rivian said the programme is intended to validate battery performance, thermal management, suspension durability and overall vehicle reliability under demanding conditions.

According to the company, the R2’s battery and electronic systems are designed to be well protected from environmental exposure, while the chassis and suspension have been engineered to handle heavy use both on-road and off-road.
Rivian has not yet confirmed final pricing for the R2. When the model was unveiled, the company said it expected a starting price of about $45,000, positioning the vehicle below its current R1 lineup and placing it in the highly competitive midsize electric SUV segment.

The R2 is seen as a key product in Rivian’s strategy to expand beyond the premium market and reach a broader customer base. With final validation testing under way and production preparations largely complete, Rivian said it remains on track to begin deliveries in the coming months.
