Rheinmetall’s Castings Business Unit Secures Major Order for Hybrid Vehicle Engine Blocks from SAIC in China

Rheinmetall’s Materials and Trade division has secured a major order to produce engine blocks for a hybrid vehicle. The order, valued at a figure in the mid-double-digit million-euro range, comprises over 500,000 units and was won against rival bids from global competitors. The Castings business unit, a leading producer of lightweight aluminum parts, will produce the parts using gravity casting in China, with production set to begin in 2024. The customer is Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), China’s largest automaker, which covers the complete spectrum of drive technology.

The Castings business unit, a globe-spanning joint venture of Rheinmetall and HUAYU Automotive Systems Co. Ltd. (HASCO), has production facilities in both Germany and China, and its product portfolio includes engine blocks and cylinder heads, structural parts, transmission and chassis components, as well as special e-mobility solutions. The order underscores Rheinmetall’s expertise as a competent partner of the global automotive industry for modern e-vehicles and hybrid systems that result in lower petrol consumption, leading to lower CO2 emissions and benefiting the environment.

Rheinmetall is now receiving an increasing number of orders for components and systems for modern, environmentally friendly mobility, marking a significant milestone on the Group’s path to successfully tackling the challenges facing the industry as it moves towards complete e-mobility. The Castings business unit is a joint venture between Rheinmetall and SAIC, with each holding a 50 percent stake, comprising two large companies, KS HUAYU AluTech GmbH in Europe and HASCO KSPG Nonferrous Components (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (KPSNC) in China.
