Volkswagen has given employees a first look at its upcoming ID.1, a small electric car designed to offer an affordable entry into the electric vehicle market. The car, which is expected to have a base price of around €20,000, was unveiled at a works meeting at the company’s headquarters in Wolfsburg, Germany.
While a teaser image of the concept car was released to the public, the official premiere is scheduled for March, where a show car will offer a preview of the vehicle. However, the public presentation will not include the production model.

“The world premiere of the production model is scheduled for 2027,” Volkswagen confirmed, though it emphasized that this does not guarantee the availability of the car for purchase that year. The company refrained from making promises regarding the release date of the production version. Volkswagen has not disclosed details about the car’s technology or its full design, offering only a front view of the concept so far.
The ID.1 is set to be a part of Volkswagen’s broader strategy to make electric mobility more accessible, with a price aimed at attracting new customer groups. “An affordable, high-quality, and profitable electric Volkswagen from Europe for Europe – that’s the Champions League of automotive engineering,” said Volkswagen brand boss Thomas Schäfer. “With the conclusion of negotiations in December, we set the largest future plan in Volkswagen’s history in motion. We are pursuing an ambitious path to ensure we achieve our shared goals with full commitment. A key step in this is making e-mobility attractive for everyone – that is our brand promise.”

The ID.1 is expected to differ visually from the ID.2, or the ID2.all concept car, though specific design details remain under wraps. While the ID2.all was first revealed in March 2023, its production model is not expected until 2026. As for the ID.1, Volkswagen has not yet confirmed where the car will be manufactured in Europe.
