Rajasthan has added 47 electric buses to its public transport network under the Indian government’s PM e-Bus Sewa scheme, expanding zero-emission mobility services in two of the state’s cities.
According to The Times of India report, 29 buses have been deployed in Jaipur, the state capital, while the remaining 18 units have been allocated to Bhilwara.
The buses were procured by transport operator Chartered Speed from Pune-based electric commercial vehicle manufacturer EKA Mobility and are being operated under a gross cost contract model.
EKA Mobility Buses Join State Fleet
Most of the newly introduced vehicles appear to be EKA Mobility’s EKA 9M electric bus model.
The nine-meter bus measures 9.2 meters in length and is designed for urban and intercity public transport applications. Depending on the selected configuration, it can accommodate either 33 or 35 passengers in a 2×2 seating arrangement.
The buses are equipped with air conditioning and wheelchair-accessible lift doors, while electronically controlled air suspension is available as an optional feature.
Battery and Performance Specifications
The EKA 9M is powered by a 213 kW electric motor paired with a 200 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack.
According to EKA Mobility, the battery supports charging speeds of up to 240 kW and provides a driving range of up to 180 kilometers on a single charge.
The vehicle has a top speed of 80 kilometers per hour and can handle gradients of up to 17 percent, making it suitable for a variety of operating conditions.
Larger Rollout Planned Across Rajasthan
Speaking at the launch ceremony in Jaipur, Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said the state is expected to receive a total of 1,150 electric buses through the PM e-Bus Sewa program.
The central government has already approved 675 buses for deployment across eight cities: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Kota, Ajmer, Alwar, Bikaner, and Bhilwara.
Sharma said approval has also been granted for an additional 475 buses, although no timeline was provided for their entry into service.
Targeting Full Deployment by Diwali
The Rajasthan government aims to complete deployment of the initial 675 approved buses by Diwali, which falls in early November this year.
The rollout is likely linked to a contract awarded to EKA Mobility and Chartered Speed in April 2025 covering 675 electric buses, including 565 nine-meter models and 110 twelve-meter buses.
Overall, the two companies plan to deploy 876 electric buses across Rajasthan under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme.
Supporting India’s Clean Mobility Goals
The PM e-Bus Sewa initiative is one of India’s key programs aimed at accelerating the adoption of electric public transportation in cities nationwide.
The scheme provides support for the procurement and operation of electric buses, helping local authorities modernize transit fleets, improve air quality, and reduce emissions from urban transportation.
As one of India’s largest states, Rajasthan’s planned deployment of more than 1,100 electric buses is expected to significantly expand electric public transport services while supporting the country’s broader clean mobility and decarbonization objectives.
The latest deliveries also strengthen EKA Mobility’s position in India’s rapidly growing electric bus market as state governments continue investing in zero-emission transit solutions.
