The Port of Los Angeles has launched a $75 million incentive program to support the deployment of battery-electric Class 8 drayage trucks, offering eligible operators up to $300,000 per vehicle as it works to accelerate the transition to zero-emission freight transportation.
The Zero-Emission Truck Purchasing Incentive Project is open to Licensed Motor Carriers (LMCs) registered in the Port Drayage Truck Registry. Applicants must commit to purchasing at least 10 battery-electric Class 8 drayage trucks, with individual awards capped at $24 million.
Funding supports zero-emission freight transition
The program combines $50 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Ports Program with an additional $25 million from the Port of Los Angeles’ Clean Truck Fund Rate.
According to the port, the funding has been specifically allocated to support the deployment of battery-electric drayage trucks serving cargo operations at the port.
Eligible operators are now invited to submit proposals. The port said questions related to the request for proposals will be accepted until July 20, while completed applications must be submitted by December 3.
Part of broader clean port strategy
The incentive program forms part of a wider investment initiative valued at more than $600 million, including grant funding and matching contributions, aimed at modernizing port operations and reducing emissions.
The Port of Los Angeles said the broader program supports its goal of achieving 100% zero-emission terminal operations while promoting job creation and community engagement as the port advances its long-term decarbonization strategy.
