Orion Energy Systems said it will install 104 direct-current fast-charging stations and associated infrastructure for the Boston Public Schools system, marking a major expansion of electric vehicle charging capacity for one of the largest school districts in the United States.
The charging stations will be deployed at the Freeport Bus Yard in Boston, which will also serve as the operating base for the district’s electric school buses. The project will be delivered by Orion Energy Systems through its Voltrek charging division.

Boston Public Schools plans to electrify its entire fleet of around 750 buses in collaboration with Orion’s Voltrek unit, a move the company described as the largest school bus electrification programme in the Northeastern United States. Orion said it has previously worked with the district on earlier phases of the transition.
The company added that it has already installed 13 charging stations for the Lower Pioneer Valley School Educational Cooperative, also in Massachusetts, and is currently leading multiple fleet electrification initiatives across the Northeast. These include multi-site municipal deployments and charging roll-outs for electric delivery vans.

“Orion/Voltrek is proud to be a reliable long-term provider of EV charging, infrastructure and maintenance to BPS, one of the most innovative public school districts in America,” said Sally Washlow. “Fleet managers increasingly rely on Orion/Voltrek to deliver the quality, reliability and scalability that enterprise fleet managers require.”
The Boston project comes as U.S. school districts accelerate the shift to electric buses, driven by emissions targets, operating cost considerations and federal and state funding incentives. DC fast-charging infrastructure is seen as a key enabler for large fleets that require high vehicle availability and predictable daily routes.
