Norway has surpassed the milestone of one million battery-electric vehicles on its roads when combining passenger cars and light commercial vehicles, reflecting the country’s long-standing leadership in electric mobility adoption.
According to data from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, Norway currently has 951,300 battery-electric passenger cars and 50,300 battery-electric light commercial vehicles in operation.
Battery-electric vehicles now account for 32.4% of all passenger cars and 9.7% of light commercial vehicles in the national fleet. Overall, Norway has about 2.94 million passenger cars and around 519,000 light commercial vehicles registered, meaning roughly one in three passenger cars in the country runs fully on electricity.
The trend is supported by strong demand for new electric vehicles. In February 2026, battery-electric models represented 98% of all new passenger car registrations in Norway.
By comparison, EV penetration remains significantly lower in other European markets. For example, Germany reached the milestone of two million battery-electric passenger cars earlier in 2026, but these account for only about 4% of the country’s total passenger car fleet.
“This demonstrates what is possible when policymakers provide planning certainty and enable people to drive emission-free,” said Christina Bu of the Norwegian Electric Vehicle Association.
Bu noted that further progress will be needed, particularly in electrifying light commercial vehicles. “One million cars is an impressive number, but we are still far from our goal. There are still significantly more vehicles with internal combustion engines on the roads. The aim is to replace all of these with zero-emission vehicles.”
The adoption of electric vehicles varies across regions of Norway. Urban areas show the highest levels of electrification, with Oslo recording the largest share of battery-electric vehicles at 48.9% of its passenger car fleet. Analysts expect the capital to exceed the 50% mark before the summer.
Other regions with high EV shares include Akershus at 40.2% and Vestland at 38.9%. More rural areas show lower levels of adoption, with Innlandet at 19.5% and Finnmark at 12.2%.
