The North York Moors National Park Authority has partnered with Zest, an EV charging infrastructure operator, to introduce new electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities in the National Park. The initiative includes the installation of 12 new charge points, with the first already operational in the Hutton le Hole car park, and plans for additional locations including Newton under Roseberry.
Zest, known for its investments in public access EV charging infrastructure, has jointly funded this project with the National Park Authority. They will also manage and maintain the fast chargers to ensure reliable service. Lucas St John, Commercial Manager for the National Park Authority, noted that the introduction of EV charging points marks a significant step in reducing carbon emissions in the North York Moors.
The North York Moors National Park, covering 554 square miles and attracting nearly nine million visitors annually, is known for its moorland, coastline, and wildlife. The park’s Management Plan aligns with national policy to conserve and enhance the landscape, biodiversity, cultural heritage, dark skies, and natural resources, while promoting public understanding and supporting the local economy.
Karl Battersby, corporate director of environment at North Yorkshire Council, emphasized the importance of EV charging infrastructure for residents, workers, and visitors in the region. He stated, “The offer of electric vehicle charging infrastructure is vital to those working in, living in, and visiting our beautiful county.”
Zest Founder and CEO, Robin Heap, highlighted the significance of investing in charging facilities at popular rural destinations like National Parks for a smooth transition to EVs. He remarked, “Our partnership with North York Moors shows the power of investing in the future, and that rural areas can play a key role in reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.”
This initiative follows a series of EV charging points opened last year by North Yorkshire Council and Zest in market towns such as Helmsley, Malton, and Pickering, which have already proven popular with residents and visitors alike.
