NIO has unveiled a significant surge in demand for its battery swap stations. Insights gained from a distance of over 10 billion kilometers traveled reveal that 60 percent of users have chosen to utilize NIO’s 1,383 Power Swap Stations, which now provide a convenient charging solution in both China and Europe.

NIO users achieved this remarkable milestone of 10 billion kilometers in just 1,762 days since the brand’s launch. Highlighting its recent growth, NIO took less than 28 months from its launch to reach the first billion kilometers, at a time when there were only 150 Power Swap Stations available. In a further 31 months, NIO managed to accumulate an additional nine billion kilometers.

The distance covered, equivalent to making 26,143 round trips to the moon, reaffirms NIO’s dedication to investing in a power swapping network. NIO’s Power Swap Stations allow vehicles to automatically park and switch to a fresh, fully-charged battery unit in under five minutes. Earlier this month, NIO celebrated another battery swap milestone, completing its 20 millionth swap at the NIO Power Swap Station in Wuchang Service Center, Hangzhou, China. Currently, a swap takes place, on average, every 1.6 seconds. This month, NIO’s Third Generation Power Swap Station, with a capacity of 408 swaps per day (a 30 percent increase from the current capacity), entered service.

With plans to establish approximately 1,000 additional Power Swap Stations in China and up to 70 more in Europe by the end of 2023, NIO anticipates that more users will opt for swapping. This move has also allowed the brand to introduce the flexible Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model. BaaS decouples the cost, maintenance, and upgradability of batteries from the vehicle, making electric vehicle ownership more appealing. In markets like Norway, approximately 95 percent of users have opted for BaaS.

William Li, CEO of NIO, comments, “Reaching this milestone is a proud moment that reaffirms NIO as a trusted and proven solution for our loyal users. Our compelling range of power solutions, including our battery swap stations, offers the freedom to travel with confidence, knowing that a reliable power solution is always within reach.”

With over 320,000 vehicles on the road, NIO continues to evolve from a fledgling manufacturer to an established original equipment manufacturer (OEM) available for purchase in six countries, with plans to expand to up to 25 countries by 2025. The NIO lineup comprises seven smart EVs equipped with leading user interfaces, such as the virtual assistant NOMI, along with a suite of driver-assistance technologies. Since NIO’s launch, users have driven over one billion kilometers using NIO’s advanced Assisted and Intelligent Driving technologies, including NIO Navigate On Pilot, which combines navigation, HD maps, and NIO Pilot. NIO’s in-car “Smart System,” the latest version of which is named Banyan, is constantly evolving, enabling NIO to continually enhance and update its services and features based on user feedback.

To commemorate this achievement, NIO’s growing community is organizing several #10Bkm events at NIO Houses and Service Centers. In Norway, users have participated in a drive and family gathering in a forest near Oslo. Various NIO Houses have created special cakes, and NIO will reward users who have traveled the greatest distances in the first two weeks of May. For full details, visit NIO.com and the NIO App.
