Nio said it will expand the availability of long-range battery packs across its battery swap network this month, as strong vehicle deliveries and rising demand continue to put pressure on its infrastructure.

The Chinese electric vehicle maker said it will add more than 4,200 long-range battery packs for its main Nio brand in January, including 1,200 100-kWh packs and more than 3,000 102-kWh packs. The company said the expansion will be adjusted further based on user demand.

The 100-kWh battery pack is used in older Nio models, while the 102-kWh version supports the company’s newer vehicles. Nio’s move follows a similar expansion by its mass-market sub-brand Onvo, which has also been accelerating battery deployments in recent weeks.

Nio delivered 48,135 vehicles in December, setting a new monthly record and surpassing the previous high of 40,397 units recorded in October. The strong performance was driven mainly by the third-generation ES8, helping the Nio brand reach a record 31,897 deliveries in the month, the company said.

Onvo, which targets the mainstream electric SUV segment, began a battery expansion initiative on December 5, announcing plans to deploy more than 8,000 additional battery packs. As of mid-December, the brand had already added over 2,600 packs, and earlier today said the 6,000th unit had entered service, marking 75 percent completion of the plan.

Both the Nio and Onvo brands have faced battery supply constraints in recent months, driven by strong demand for the third-generation ES8 and the Onvo L90. During the initial launch phase of these models, Nio prioritized allocating battery packs to vehicle production rather than to swap stations.

Nio currently operates 3,677 battery swap stations across China, most of which are accessible to Onvo vehicles. The company said the latest expansion is also intended to prepare for higher travel demand during the Lunar New Year holiday period from February 15 to 23.
