Electric vehicle manufacturer Nio will begin installing its Power Swap Stations (PSS) in the UK in 2023, , announced Eleanor Sand, Nio’s Network Development Lead, on January 3. The company currently operates over 1,300 PSS in China, with plans to increase that number to 1,700 by the end of the year.

“We are actively seeking sites throughout all cities in the UK to host our Power Swap Stations, so if you are a landowner or CPO interested in learning more, please do get in touch,” Sand posted on Linkedin.

In Europe, Nio has 10 PSS in operation and has announced plans to have 120 PSS by the end of 2023, with 400 new stations set to be built in China and 110 in Europe. Nio’s ultimate goal is to have 4,000 PSS in operation by 2025, with 1,000 of these located overseas.

The company is aiming to establish a presence in 25 countries by 2025, and has already entered Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Denmark. Its next targets include France, Switzerland, Italy, Hungary, Spain, Austria, and the UK.

Nio has announced that it will expand its presence in the US market before 2025, according to William Li, the company’s founder. While Nio opened its first office in North America in 2016, it has recently ramped up hiring in its Silicon Valley headquarters, advertising numerous positions related to US vehicle safety compliance.

The company has also unveiled its Generation 3 Power Swap Station (PSS), which can store 21 batteries and perform 408 swaps daily, using lidar technology to navigate for the swap. The Generation 3 PSS will go into operation in March 2023, but it is unclear which version of the PSS will be installed in the UK. Nio currently operates one Nio House and three Nio Spaces in Europe, with plans to open 10 more.
