Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio has disclosed new details about its upcoming flagship SUV, the ES9, indicating a maximum driving range of up to 620 kilometres, according to the latest regulatory documents published by China’s industry regulator.

The ES9 is equipped with a 102-kWh battery pack weighing 545 kg, delivering an energy density of 187 watt-hours per kilogram, based on a vehicle model catalogue eligible for purchase tax reductions released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on Monday.

Depending on configuration, the ES9 has curb weights of between 2,845 kg and 2,915 kg, corresponding to CLTC-rated ranges of 620 km, 600 km and 580 km. By comparison, Nio’s current flagship SUV, the third-generation ES8, offers a CLTC range of 635 km using the same battery capacity.

Nio has indicated that the ES9 will sit above the ES8 in its lineup. Regulatory filings show the ES9 measures 5,365 mm in length, 2,029 mm in width and 1,870 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,250 mm, making it larger than the ES8, which is currently the company’s biggest electric SUV.

The ES9 is expected to debut later this year, potentially at the Beijing auto show in late April. Nio co-founder and president Qin Lihong said earlier this year that the model’s technical launch event was tentatively scheduled for around April 10.

“All new technologies deployed on the ET9 would be applied to the ES9,” Qin said at a January user engagement event, adding that the model is positioned more toward business-oriented use and is expected to build on the success of the ES8.

The ES9 is expected to feature Nio’s latest technology suite, including dual Shenji NX9031 smart driving chips and the SkyRide chassis system, similar to those used in the ET9 sedan.

Nio launched the third-generation ES8 in September 2025 with a starting price of RMB 406,800 ($58,760), including the battery pack. The model has since become one of the company’s strongest performers, reaching cumulative deliveries of 60,000 units earlier this year.
