Nio opened its first battery swap station in Shenzhen on May 20, 2018, and has steadily expanded the network despite early scepticism over the commercial viability of the approach. The latest milestone was reached 2,819 days after the first swap service was provided.

According to the company, Nio users have consumed a total of 5.28 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity through battery swap stations, equivalent to the annual power consumption of about 2.64 million households. Compared with conventional charging, battery swapping has saved users a cumulative 83.41 million hours, or an average of 88 hours per user.

Measured against comparable gasoline vehicle usage, Nio said the service has helped users save an estimated 26.3 billion yuan ($3.6 billion) in fuel costs, averaging around 27,000 yuan per user. The company also said the service has reduced carbon dioxide emissions by about 4,170 tonnes, an amount it equated to the annual carbon absorption capacity of roughly 167,000 trees.

In addition to standard swaps, Nio has provided 563,922 battery flexible upgrade services, allowing users to temporarily access higher-capacity battery packs when needed.

The pace of adoption has accelerated over time. Nio reached its first 1 million battery swaps after 29 months of operation. The 10 millionth swap was completed on July 4, 2022, four years after the service launched. More recent milestones have come in quicker succession, with the 50 millionth swap reached in August 2024 and the 90 millionth in October 2025.
