Nissan is preparing to revive its iconic electric vehicle (EV), the LEAF, with a complete overhaul set for its next-generation release. The upcoming model was recently spotted testing in the US, offering the best glimpse yet of the refreshed design.

Originally launched in 2010, the Nissan LEAF made history as the world’s first mass-market EV. Its affordable pricing and smooth driving experience made it a popular choice among early adopters.

However, as the electric vehicle market has rapidly evolved over the past 15 years, the LEAF has struggled to keep up with newer models that offer improved range, faster charging, and advanced technology.

Nissan plans to change that with its next-gen LEAF, which is set to depart significantly from the original design. Sources familiar with the development suggest that the new LEAF will take the form of a crossover coupe, possibly resembling a “mini Ariya,” a reference to Nissan’s larger electric SUV. Despite this, the new model is expected to be smaller and sportier than Nissan’s current compact models, like the Qashqai and Juke.

While specific details remain scarce, the redesign marks a departure from the traditional hatchback look that characterized the LEAF for over a decade. Nissan has confirmed that production of the next-gen LEAF will begin at its UK facility in spring 2025
