Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors has launched plans to join the Philippine government’s Electric Vehicle Incentive Strategy (EVIS), with the aim of producing a new hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) at its Santa Rosa plant in Laguna by mid-2028, subject to approval.
The plan was announced during a meeting between Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and Mitsubishi Motors Chief Executive Takao Kato.
The project will be carried out by Mitsubishi Motors Philippines Corporation (MMPC), which is also planning additional investments to upgrade facilities in support of electrification. The initiative is expected to strengthen the local supply chain and create employment opportunities.
“The Philippines has long been one of our most important markets, where we have engaged in production and sales for many years,” Kato said. “In cooperation with the Philippine government, we are honoured to contribute to the advancement of vehicle electrification and industrial development through the EVIS programme.”
MMPC currently manufactures the Mirage, Mirage G4 and L300 at its Santa Rosa facility, which has an annual production capacity of 50,000 units.
The announcement comes as Mitsubishi Motors expands its electrification efforts globally. In January, Mitsubishi Fuso entered a collaboration with Foxconn to establish a joint venture focused on electric buses in Japan.
In Europe, Mitsubishi Motors unveiled the all-electric Eclipse Cross in 2025, its first fully electric model in the region in more than a decade. The vehicle is produced alongside the Renault Scénic E-Tech Electric at a Renault facility in France and offers a driving range of up to 600 km.
The company’s strategy reflects a broader shift toward electrified mobility, combining hybrid production in Southeast Asia with battery-electric expansion in other global markets.
