Mini Cooper Goes Electric: New Models to Hit the Market by Year-End

The iconic Mini Cooper is all set to make a comeback, this time in an electric avatar. The first official key data for the upcoming Mini Cooper Electric has been announced, revealing exciting details about the fifth generation of the three-door hatchback. The new models are slated to be available for purchase by the end of this year and will be produced in Leipzig from November.

The new Mini Cooper Electric will come in two versions – the Mini Cooper E with 135 kW power and the Mini Cooper SE with 160 kW power. The Mini Cooper E will be powered by a 40.7 kWh battery, while the Mini Cooper SE will feature a 54.2 kWh energy storage capacity. With these specifications, the new models are expected to achieve ranges of between 300 and 400 kilometers, depending on the version. The technical key data of the Cooper Electric aligns with the values that were leaked in advance.

According to the manufacturer, the new Mini Cooper Electric is “in the starting blocks” and is expected to hit the markets soon, alongside the Mini Countryman, which will also be produced at the BMW plant in Leipzig from November 2023. Last month, the first official data for the Mini Countryman was revealed, and from 2024, the production model of the Aceman, which was presented last year as an electric concept, will complete the new Mini family.

While the Mini Cooper Electric has already made its way to the Canadian markets, it remains to be seen whether it will be available in the United States, especially as American drivers tend to prefer larger vehicles. However, Mini is confident that it can redefine the brand’s hallmark go-kart feeling by consistently perpetuating the concept of urban driving fun that has been so successful for more than 60 years.

Mini writes that it was “able to draw on development expertise within the BMW Group in order to achieve further improved driving dynamics in the new Mini Cooper Electric.” It remains to be seen whether the electric Mini will be produced in the BMW factory in Mexico for the North American market, but the company is expected to make an announcement soon.
