MG Motor has introduced a groundbreaking addition to its electric vehicle lineup, showcasing the new Extended Range variant for the MG4 model. With a remarkable range exceeding 500 kilometres according to the WLTP standard, the MG4 Extended Range is at the forefront of electric car technology. Although currently exclusively available in the United Kingdom, plans are in place to potentially roll out this impressive model across other European markets.

Rumors that had been circulating prior to this announcement have proven accurate. The extended range is made possible by the integration of a larger battery boasting a 77 kWh capacity, propelling the WLTP range to an impressive 520 kilometres, equivalent to 323 miles. Fast-charging capabilities are also a highlight, as MG Motor reports that the battery can be charged from ten to 80 per cent in a mere 39 minutes through a fast-charging station. This efficient charging process operates at an average power of 83 kW, although the peak charging power remains undisclosed.

Enhancing the vehicle’s performance, the new variant is equipped with a more robust motor boasting an output of 184 kW. This dynamic upgrade results in an acceleration time of just 6.5 seconds for the 0 to 100 kph sprint. The innovative design features SAIC’s Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) with a rear-mounted engine configuration. Notably, the MG4 XPower model, the flagship variant introduced in July, includes an additional electric motor on the front axle for an all-wheel-drive capability of 320 kW. However, this model exclusively features the 64 kWh battery, providing a range of 385 kilometres.

In the UK market, prices for the newly launched MG4 Extended Range variant begin at £36,495, which is approximately 42,450 euros. This introduces a diverse array of four drive variants within the MG4 range. These options encompass the Standard Range model, utilizing a 51 kWh LFP battery with rear-wheel drive, and the Long Range variant equipped with a 64 kWh NMC battery and rear-wheel drive—both of which were available from the initial market launch. The top-tier all-wheel-drive XPower model, along with the newly introduced Extended Range variant featuring a larger rear-wheel-drive battery, have expanded the lineup to a total of six models, significantly diversifying the offerings for MG enthusiasts in the UK.

While the official launch in Germany is still awaiting confirmation, the anticipation is palpable. In line with the pricing structure in the UK, MG Motor Germany is projected to mirror the £36,495 pricing for the MG4 Extended Range. Translated to the German market, this would result in an estimated starting price of 46,990 euros. This strategic pricing approach, if consistent, would make the 520-kilometre range of the MG4 Extended Range version an enticing option for environmentally conscious consumers in Germany as well.
