Mercedes-Benz is gearing up to introduce its 2026 CLA EV, heralded as a game-changer for the entry-level EV market. The electric sedan, built on the company’s new MMA platform, is set to deliver significant advancements in range, charging speed, and efficiency, targeting rivals such as Tesla’s Model 3 and BMW’s i4.
“This car is designed to set new standards in range, efficiency, and charging speed,” said Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius, describing the CLA EV as the beginning of “a new chapter for the entry-level segment at Mercedes-Benz.”
Cutting-Edge Technology for Long-Distance Driving
The CLA EV features an 800V high-voltage system capable of ultra-fast charging, enabling up to 248 miles (400 km) of range in just 15 minutes, according to the company. Mercedes engineers report that during testing, the vehicle traveled 2,309 miles (3,716 km) within 24 hours, charging 40 times at 10-minute intervals.
Timo Stegmaier, senior manager for the CLA’s electric drive system, revealed that the vehicle achieved a range of nearly 800 miles (1,270 km) with just two 10-minute charging stops, emphasizing its long-distance capability. While engineers observed charging peaks of 320 kW during testing, Stegmaier noted, “Obviously, the peak of 320 won’t be maintained.”
The top-tier variant is expected to deliver up to 466 miles (750 km) on a full charge under WLTP standards.
Advanced Features and Affordability
The CLA EV will be the first Mercedes model equipped with the automaker’s MB.OS software platform, which integrates artificial intelligence and machine learning for enhanced connectivity and functionality. While initially launching with Level 2 autonomy, the system will be “generally ready” for future upgrades to SAE Level 3 autonomy, the company said.
Visually, the CLA EV boasts distinctive design elements, including a unique three-star logo headlight. The model also promises to bring Mercedes’ advanced technologies, such as a supercomputer-powered AI system, into the entry-level market, making it an affordable yet sophisticated choice.
Mercedes plans to officially unveil the CLA EV in spring 2025, with deliveries slated for later that year. Pricing details remain under wraps, but the starting price is anticipated to be around $50,000, positioning it as a competitive alternative in the mid-range EV market.
