MG Motor, under the SAIC brand, is set to introduce an estate variant of its electric compact model MG4, aimed at replacing the aging MG5 estate. Additionally, the company is planning to launch a small electric car called MG2, expanding its electric vehicle portfolio.

The estate version of the MG4 is scheduled to debut on the UK market later this year, as reported by Autocar. The MG5 Electric, available in various body versions in China under the SAIC brand Roewe, is based on the same platform as the MG4, known as the Modular Scalable Platform (MSP).

SAIC’s decision to introduce an estate version of the MG4 comes as a logical step to replace the aging MG5, leveraging the cost-effectiveness of using an existing model. It is yet to be confirmed whether the new model will retain the MG5 name or be branded as the MG4 estate. However, it is certain that the new estate model will feature rear-wheel drive, a departure from the front-wheel drive layout of its predecessor.

The MG4’s drive, depending on the battery, is expected to deliver between 125 and 180 kW in the rear-wheel drive models, with battery options including a 51 kWh LFP battery, a 64 kWh NMC battery, and a Long Range model with a 77 kWh NMC battery. This translates to a WLTP range of 350 to 520 kilometers for the five-door model, with the estate variant expected to offer a slightly lower range. It remains uncertain if the 320 kW all-wheel drive MG4 XPower variant will be available in the estate version.

In addition to the MG4 estate, MG Motor is reportedly planning to introduce a small electric car priced around 20,000 euros by 2025, potentially named the MG2. David Allison, Head of Product Planning at MG Motor UK, mentioned this plan, highlighting the opportunity for an affordable EV with a decent range.

With the introduction of these new models, MG Motor aims to compete in the segment of affordable electric vehicles, targeting models such as the Dacia Spring, Renault 5, and upcoming VW ID.2.
