Mercedes-Benz will phase out its separate “EQ” model names for electric vehicles and instead use the designation “with EQ technology,” aiming to integrate EVs more seamlessly into its lineup, the company said.
Since 2016, Mercedes has branded its electric models with the “EQ” prefix—such as EQS, EQE, and EQA—treating them as a distinct sub-brand.

However, the naming convention has led to customer confusion, as it deviates from the company’s traditional system of lettering based on body style and numbers referring to engine displacement.
The shift follows the naming approach used for the upcoming electric G-Class, officially called the “G580 with EQ technology.” Future electric models, such as the next-generation CLA, will follow the same format. Plug-in hybrids will be labeled “with EQ hybrid technology.”

Mercedes said the change allows EVs to be recognized as part of the core model range rather than a separate category. It also aligns with the company’s move toward more traditional design elements in its EV lineup, such as a faux grille on the updated 2025 EQS.
