Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the Vision Iconic concept car, signaling a major design shift away from the rounded “One Bow” styling of its EQS and EQE models. The concept introduces a bold Art Deco-inspired design, featuring the return of the brand’s classic upright grille and new solar paint technology capable of generating enough electricity for up to 12,000 kilometres annually.
The move marks Mercedes’ effort to blend modern electric technology with the brand’s heritage styling after lukewarm reception of its earlier EQ models. Those designs, focused on aerodynamic efficiency and space, drew criticism for lacking the elegance and visual identity long associated with Mercedes’ flagship sedans.

“With the Vision Iconic, we are showing what the next generation of Mercedes design could look like—luxurious, intelligent, and timeless,” said Gorden Wagener, Mercedes-Benz’s Chief Design Officer. “We are taking inspiration from the golden age of automotive design while pushing forward with cutting-edge technology.”
The Vision Iconic features a deep black solar-active coating spanning 11 square metres, which Mercedes says can deliver an energy yield equivalent to 12,000 kilometres per year under Stuttgart conditions and up to 20,000 kilometres in sunnier regions such as Los Angeles. The paint’s solar efficiency stands at about 20 per cent and relies on a thin, nearly invisible solar-active layer rather than visible panels.
In addition to its striking exterior, the concept integrates next-generation technologies, including “neuromorphic computing,” which mimics brain function to reduce energy consumption by up to 90 per cent compared to current systems. Mercedes also previewed its upcoming “steer-by-wire” system—set for production in 2026—which eliminates the traditional steering column in favor of fully electronic control.

The interior design embraces a blend of modern minimalism and early 20th-century craftsmanship. Highlights include a floating glass dashboard, brass accents, mother-of-pearl inlays, and deep blue velvet seating. The model’s Art Deco aesthetic aims to evoke the sophistication of 1930s grand tourers, such as the Mercedes 540 K “Autobahn Courier,” while modernizing the concept for the electric era.
Although Mercedes has not disclosed details regarding the powertrain or battery capacity, the Vision Iconic serves primarily as a design study. The concept offers an early glimpse into how the automaker plans to merge heritage cues with future EQ technology in upcoming S-Class and E-Class successors.
