Mercedes-Benz has announced the global rollout of its MBUX 2.6 software update, which will be delivered over-the-air to more than two million vehicles, including both electric and combustion engine models. The update introduces new functionalities aimed at enhancing the user experience across its infotainment systems, with particular improvements for electric vehicle owners.

One of the key features of the update is the enhancement to the “Navigation with Electric Intelligence” system. The new ‘Alternative Live Routes’ function now allows electric vehicles to receive multiple intelligent route suggestions that include necessary charging stops. Previously, the system would offer only a single route, with alternative charging options calculated only after route selection. Mercedes-Benz noted that the chosen route is continuously updated during the journey based on factors such as traffic, driving distance, and estimated charging time.

The feature is available on electric vehicles equipped with the second-generation MBUX system, including the EQS, EQS SUV, EQE, EQE SUV, EQA (from model year 2023/2), EQB (from model year 2023/2), and the electric G-Class. Mercedes did not disclose the number of electric vehicles affected by the update.

For off-road capable electric vehicles—such as the G-Class, EQS SUV, and EQE SUV—Mercedes is also introducing a new ‘Offroad Track’ function. This add-on, accessible via mobile apps and in-vehicle software, enables users to record and share off-road routes, view community-submitted tracks, and upload video footage using a smartphone-mounted setup. The system also logs vehicle telemetry such as tilt angle, altitude, speed, and GPS location. The off-road feature is a paid add-on, but pricing details have not been released.

Another enhancement included in the update is the integration of Google Satellite View into the navigation display for all electric and compatible combustion engine models. The feature is designed to provide high-resolution aerial imagery to improve navigation, particularly in rural or less structured environments.

The company also highlighted the continued deployment of ChatGPT for vehicles with the first-generation MBUX system. This AI assistant, introduced via a separate free update, has seen significant engagement from users. “Customer feedback was incredibly positive, resulting in six times higher usage rates of the voice-recognition technology,” Mercedes stated. The system integrates Microsoft Bing search capabilities and generates responses using ChatGPT via Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service.
