Mercedes-Benz has revealed promising efficiency figures for its upcoming CLA-Class sedan, claiming the model will achieve an impressive 5.2 miles per kWh. If these numbers hold up, the CLA-Class could surpass the Lucid Air Pure, which achieves 5.0 miles per kWh, making it one of the most energy-efficient electric vehicles available.
The CLA-Class is built on Mercedes-Benz’s new modular platform, MMA, designed to accommodate both electric and hybrid powertrains. This dual compatibility is noteworthy, as platforms traditionally designed to support both internal combustion engines (ICE) and EVs often compromise on the efficiency of one or the other. However, the MMA platform seems to have successfully balanced the needs of both types of drivetrains, providing strong performance while maintaining excellent energy efficiency. “The CLA-Class is designed to excel in both ICE and electric configurations, a feat rarely accomplished in the industry,” said Mercedes-Benz.
Key features of the CLA-Class include an 800-volt electrical architecture and a modular skateboard-style chassis. This enables rapid DC fast charging, allowing the vehicle to add 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes. The vehicle will be powered by a 268-horsepower motor on the rear axle, with an additional 108 horsepower available on the front axle for 4MATIC all-wheel-drive models. Mercedes-Benz has developed these motors in-house, which distinguishes them from many competitors who rely on third-party suppliers.
The CLA-Class will launch with an 85 kWh battery and, in hybrid versions, will feature Mercedes-Benz’s new ICE FAME engines, paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and an integrated electric motor. This 48-volt hybrid system will allow limited engine-off full EV driving using a 1.3 kWh traction battery.
The vehicle’s technical advancements are part of a broader push from Mercedes-Benz to improve its electric vehicle offerings. After struggling with slow sales and feedback surrounding its EQ-Class lineup, the automaker is clearly committed to advancing its electric future. The CLA-Class is slated for release in the 2026 model year, with two additional SUVs expected to follow shortly after.
