Mahle subsidiary chargeBIG has introduced the ‘smallBOX,’ a compact wallbox available in two versions, but it requires a central charging unit to function, the company said.
The smallBOX comes in an ECO variant with a 7.4-kilowatt charging capacity and a PRO version capable of 22 kW, according to Mahle. Unlike conventional wallboxes, which are typically standalone units mounted in home garages, the smallBOX serves as a charging point within chargeBIG’s centralized charging system, rather than an independent charging solution.

“The new, modular approach makes it possible to respond flexibly to customer demands while further optimizing the costs per charging point,” Mahle stated. The smallBOX is part of a broader system that includes the chargeCLUSTER, a distribution unit available in three sizes. The smallest version controls two smallBOXes, while the largest can manage up to 36 charging points.

The chargeCLUSTER features dynamic load management to evenly distribute available power and prevent grid overload, allowing integration with a building’s energy management system. Charging can be initiated via the chargeBIG app, third-party charging apps, or optionally through an RFID or credit/debit card terminal.

“Our innovative smallBOX approach enables us to reduce installation times and costs, making the electrification of parking spaces as easy as possible for the customer,” said Matthias Kreimeier, CEO of Mahle chargeBIG.
By centralizing charging infrastructure, chargeBIG aims to provide an efficient and scalable solution for large parking facilities, rather than focusing on individual home installations.
