Silicon Valley-based lithium-sulfur battery developer Lyten has named former executives of bankrupt Swedish battery maker Northvolt to lead its newly acquired Swedish operations, the company said on Thursday.

Matthias Arleth, Northvolt’s last chief operating officer, has been appointed CEO of Lyten Sweden. In addition, Sami Haikala will return as head of Northvolt Labs R&D in Sweden, and Markus Danglemaier will resume his previous role leading the Northvolt Ett factory, according to Lyten.

“These executives played a pivotal role in stabilising operations and delivering to customers over the last year,” the company said in a statement. “Filling these initial executive roles is an important enabling step to restarting operations in Sweden and Poland.”

Lyten’s acquisition of Northvolt assets, announced last month, marked an unexpected entry into European battery production for the startup, offering a potential lifeline for electric vehicle battery supply. Arleth joined Northvolt in July 2024 and, following the departure of co-founder Peter Carlsson in November, effectively led the company alongside two other executives through Northvolt’s bankruptcy in June.

Under Lyten CEO Dan Cook, the newly formed leadership team brings expertise in industrial transformation and knowledge of Northvolt’s assets, positioning the company to advance its European operations and support the continent’s growing demand for advanced battery technologies.
