Li Auto has opened its first overseas research and development (R&D) center in Munich, Germany, as part of its efforts to expand its global footprint. The facility, announced on January 17, will focus on advancing next-generation automotive technologies.

The German R&D center will collaborate with Li Auto’s existing teams in Beijing and Shanghai to drive research in areas such as power semiconductors, intelligent chassis systems, electric drives, and vehicle design. The company has developed its first generation of silicon carbide (SiC) power modules in China and plans to further this work with contributions from the Munich team.

The center will also support the development of advanced chassis technologies, including brake-by-wire, steer-by-wire, and active suspension systems. Additionally, it aims to align development and testing processes with European automotive standards to better meet the needs of local markets.

Li Auto highlighted the new R&D center’s importance in advancing its artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, which accounts for a significant portion of its R&D investment. The company plans to recruit global talent to build a diverse and skilled team, further supporting its research initiatives.

While competitors such as Nio, Xpeng, and Zeekr have already expanded into international markets, Li Auto’s new center reflects a strategic step toward enhancing its capabilities for global operations. Reports from late 2023 suggested the company had begun preparing for overseas market expansion by establishing a dedicated division for this purpose.
