Lamborghini’s long-anticipated first electric vehicle may not arrive as a fully electric model after all, as the Italian luxury automaker reconsiders its EV strategy due to slower-than-expected adoption rates.

The Lamborghini Lanzador, first unveiled in 2023 as a sleek, high-riding 2+2 GT concept, was originally slated to debut as the brand’s inaugural EV in 2028 before being delayed to 2029. Now, CEO Stephan Winkelmann says its final form is still undecided.

“We have made two decisions so far based on the fact that the acceptance curve of electric cars worldwide and globally, not only in our type of segment, is flattening,” Winkelmann told CarExpert. “One is that the Urus replacement will be a plug-in hybrid. The second is that we postpone the launch of the fourth model.”

Although the concept was intended to reflect Lamborghini’s electrified future, Winkelmann suggested that the brand is now weighing a plug-in hybrid version instead. “It’s something which is still very open,” he said, referring to whether the Lanzador will launch as a full EV or a PHEV.

Lamborghini introduced its first plug-in hybrid, the Revuelto, in 2023, followed by the Urus SE and Temerario. Despite committing to electrify its full lineup, Winkelmann reiterated the brand’s intention to keep internal combustion engines in play — especially if synthetic fuels become viable.

“If sustainable fuels are coming, then this is a huge opportunity to keep internal combustion engines,” Winkelmann said. “Besides that, for sure, the headline should be, we will keep them as long as possible, at least for the two supercars.”
