Japanese equipment maker Komatsu has announced a strategic partnership with Silicon Valley-based Applied Intuition to co-develop a unified software-defined vehicle (SDV) and autonomy platform for mining equipment.

The system, described by both companies as the “central brain” of Komatsu’s next generation of machinery, is aimed at boosting productivity, reducing downtime, and improving operational precision across global mining operations.

Peter Salditt, president of Komatsu’s Mining Business Division and CEO of Komatsu Mining Technologies, said the partnership represents “a step change in delivering innovative, high-performance technology,” adding that it would allow Komatsu equipment to evolve continuously to meet the unique requirements of different mine sites.

The platform will feature a flexible software architecture designed to support continuous updates, ranging from operator-assist functions to full autonomy. It will integrate data management, connected support, and embedded AI to optimize equipment performance in real time as site conditions change.

Applied Intuition, which specializes in vehicle intelligence, said the collaboration underscores the role of autonomy in addressing labor shortages and rising demand for minerals. “Our aim is to ensure customers can lead, not just keep up, as autonomy becomes the industry norm,” said Qasar Younis, the company’s co-founder and CEO.

Komatsu has called the initiative one of its most significant technology programs in its history. The companies said the platform is intended to deliver faster deployment, simplified support, and scalability across a wide range of mining environments.
