Italy has inaugurated its first megawatt charging station for electric trucks, located at the Firmian car park off the Bolzano South exit of the A22 Brenner motorway. Developed by local manufacturer Alpitronic and operated by Autostrada del Brennero S.p.A., the new site marks a significant step in advancing electric freight transport on one of Europe’s key logistics corridors.
The site features Alpitronic’s newly launched HYC1000 system, capable of delivering up to 1,000 kW of charging power. The Power Cabinet integrates eight 125 kW modules and can serve up to eight vehicles. The current configuration includes two high-power chargers and three charging stations. Among them, one unit is equipped with the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) plug offering 1,500 A and 1 MW, while another supports dual CCS connections for simultaneous charging at up to 600 kW.
Charging is currently restricted to registered trucks using ID cards issued by the Brenner motorway company, allowing the operator to monitor usage and performance. Public access is planned at a later stage. Pricing details remain pending, though the company charges €0.43/kWh at similar fast charging stations elsewhere.
“The opening of this 1 MW charging station for heavy goods vehicles along the A22 motorway – the first of its kind in Italy – confirms the commitment […] to transform this important infrastructure into a digital green corridor,” said South Tyrolean Governor Arno Kompatscher. Brennerautobahn CEO Diego Cattoni added that the new facility was “driving forward the energy transition in heavy goods transport.” Alpitronic CEO Philipp Senoner noted, “The future of transport is electric – and that requires an efficient and reliable charging infrastructure.”
The project includes forward-looking provisions such as a 2,000 kVA transformer and future installation of battery storage and a digital microgrid management platform by AVL Italia, enabling potential expansion with a second megawatt charger.
