South Korea’s Hyundai Motor plans to build a hydrogen fuel cell production facility at its existing plant in Ulsan, with construction set to begin this year and production expected to commence in 2028, according to local media reports.

The plant, which follows Hyundai’s restructuring of its hydrogen business under the HTWO brand, will be the automaker’s second-largest fuel cell production site after its Guangzhou facility in China, which has an annual capacity of 6,500 fuel cell systems.

Hyundai previously relied on production in China but now seeks to consolidate its hydrogen fuel cell development within South Korea.

With the new plant, Hyundai aims to streamline its fuel cell production process by manufacturing and integrating fuel cell stacks at a single location.

The company already markets the Nexo hydrogen fuel cell vehicle and is preparing to launch a successor, unveiled last year as the Initium concept.

At CES 2024, Hyundai outlined its broader hydrogen strategy, aiming to expand beyond fuel cells for vehicles to encompass the entire hydrogen value chain, including energy production and storage solutions. The Ulsan facility will play a key role in advancing this vision.
