Hyundai Motor Group has completed its new development center, dubbed the ‘Square Campus,’ at the Hyundai Motor Europe Technical Centre (HMETC) in Rüsselsheim, Germany, significantly enhancing its research and development capabilities in Europe.

The 25,000-square-meter facility is slated to open in March and will focus on advancing electric vehicles (EVs), driver-assistance systems, infotainment, and electrification technologies, according to the automaker.

The new site, which houses Hyundai’s largest Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) test bench to date, as well as chassis and powertrain testing facilities, marks a major investment in the Rhine-Main region.

Hyundai announced the expansion in September 2022, with construction commencing in late 2023 and wrapping up ahead of its initial November 2024 target. The facility incorporates eco-friendly materials, photovoltaic panels, and heat pump systems, in addition to offering a modern, collaborative workspace for engineers.

“Germany remains at the heart of automotive excellence,” said Tyrone Johnson, Managing Director of HMETC. “Our investment in this powerful ecosystem reflects our confidence in the Rhine-Main region’s engineering expertise and innovative strength. With our expanded facilities, we provide a hub for creative collaboration, equipping our engineers and partners with the resources and technologies needed to push boundaries and shape a more dynamic, connected future for the European automotive landscape.”

In addition to the Rüsselsheim site, Hyundai has expanded its testing facility at the Nürburgring by over 800 square meters. The automaker, which established a presence at the iconic racetrack in 2011 and transformed it into a full test center by 2013, emphasized its pioneering role in durability testing at the Nürburgring.
