Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia have set a new export record, shipping nearly 708,000 electrified vehicles (EVs) in 2024. Hyundai’s IONIQ 5 led the charge, with over 68,000 units exported, making it the brand’s top-selling EV in international markets.

Since its launch in February 2021, the IONIQ 5 has garnered global attention, praised for its unique design, which takes inspiration from Hyundai’s first production vehicle, the Pony.

The SUV offers a driving range exceeding 300 miles, quick charging capabilities, and a tech-forward interior. Despite increasing competition in the EV market, the IONIQ 5 continues to be a top seller, ranking as the fifth-best selling EV in the United States in 2024.

In total, Hyundai exported 68,227 IONIQ 5 units in 2024, making it the third-highest-selling electrified model globally, behind the Tucson Hybrid and Kona Hybrid. The surge in eco-friendly vehicle exports is notable, with Hyundai’s exports of EVs and hybrids increasing nearly 160% from 2020, when the company shipped 270,000 units.

Kia also posted strong export numbers in 2024, with 69,500 Niro Hybrids and nearly 42,500 EV6s sold internationally. Together, Hyundai and Kia exported 707,853 electrified vehicles and hybrids, marking a significant jump in their market share, which has nearly doubled from 17% in 2020 to 32% in 2024.

The U.S., Canada, and Mexico represented over 55% of the total export volume, with Europe accounting for 18.7%. Hyundai and Kia are continuing to expand their EV production both in Korea and abroad. Hyundai’s new EV plant in Georgia, which began production in October 2024, will also manufacture the IONIQ 5 refresh.

The updated model includes enhancements to driving range, styling, and Tesla Supercharger compatibility. Hyundai is also preparing to produce the IONIQ 9, its first three-row electric SUV, at the same facility. With new EV tax credits now available, the two automakers are optimistic about another strong year in 2025.
