Hyundai Mobis has expanded its portfolio of electric drive systems with the introduction of a new 160-kW powertrain, as the company seeks to strengthen its position in the global electrification market.
The supplier, which is part of the Hyundai Motor Group, said the new system complements its existing 250-kW electric drive unit and will be followed by a smaller 120-kW variant aimed at compact vehicles and emerging markets.
Hyundai Mobis said the broader product range is intended to support electric vehicles across multiple segments, from smaller passenger cars to premium models.

The company’s electrification business currently includes battery systems and electric powertrain technologies, with customers extending beyond Hyundai Group brands.
Hyundai Mobis said it has already secured battery system orders from international automotive customers.
The supplier explained that it is shifting away from a development model focused mainly on customer-specific projects toward standardised in-house electric drive platforms.
The company said it has developed core power electric, or PE, system technologies internally, including motors, inverters and reduction gearboxes.

According to Hyundai Mobis, the strategy focuses heavily on modularisation and standardisation of key components such as stators, inverters and power semiconductor modules.
“This system-level standard model offers advantages in terms of scalability, as it can be applied to various vehicle models through a platform-like approach,” the company said in a statement.
Hyundai Mobis added that the new 160-kW system improves performance while reducing size and weight.
The company said specific power, measured as output per unit weight, increased by around 16%, while total system volume was reduced by nearly 20% through the use of modular designs and standardised components.

However, Hyundai Mobis did not specify whether the comparison referred to its existing 250-kW system or competing products.
The supplier commercialised its 250-kW powertrain system in 2025 and said development of the upcoming 120-kW variant is progressing.
The smaller drive unit is expected to target compact electric vehicles and cost-sensitive markets through reduced size, lower weight and improved affordability.
Hyundai Mobis is also pursuing a broader transformation strategy focused on electrification, semiconductors, robotics and software-defined vehicles.
During a recent investor event in Seoul, the company said it aims to generate approximately 40% of its revenue from customers outside the Hyundai Group by 2033.

Current external customers reportedly include Mercedes-Benz and Stellantis. The company is also building a battery systems plant in Spain to supply the Volkswagen Group.
In parallel, Hyundai Mobis is developing a standardised electrical and electronic architecture platform for software-defined vehicles, with full commercialisation planned after 2028.
