Hyundai Motor has unveiled its latest electric SUV, the ELEXIO, in China, marking a significant step in the South Korean automaker’s plan to strengthen its position in the world’s largest electric vehicle market.

The new model, developed under the banner “In China, for China, to the World,” was introduced at a media-exclusive event in Shanghai and is described by the company as a game-changing product tailored specifically for Chinese consumers.

The ELEXIO is Hyundai’s first pure electric platform SUV launched under the Beijing Hyundai joint venture. Built on the company’s E-GMP platform, which also underpins models like the Ioniq 5, the ELEXIO offers a CLTC-rated range of up to 435 miles (700 kilometers).

It supports 800-volt fast charging capabilities, allowing the vehicle to charge from 30% to 80% in a short period. Full technical specifications and pricing are expected to be announced closer to the SUV’s commercial release later this year.

The vehicle features an aerodynamic design, a closed-off grille, and a full-length LED light bar, with styling that distinguishes it from other models in Hyundai’s global Ioniq lineup. Its development emphasizes local technologies to better appeal to the Chinese market, which has become increasingly competitive with domestic players like BYD leading in both innovation and sales.

Hyundai said the launch represents “a new starting point for the transformation from traditional fuel vehicle giant to electrification,” as reported by local media. During the debut, the company described China as “a must-fight place” and “the core of Hyundai Motor’s global strategy.”

In addition to launching the ELEXIO, Hyundai is investing 8 billion yuan ($1.1 billion) to revive its China operations. Plans include expanding its portfolio of electric, hybrid, and extended-range models, as well as doubling exports from the region. The company also recently established its first overseas R&D hub in China to support development and localization efforts.
