Honda aims to launch a small electric vehicle (EV) priced below $30,000 in North America as early as 2026, Japan’s Nikkei newspaper reported on Tuesday, as the automaker accelerates efforts to compete in the rapidly evolving battery-powered car market.

The affordable model, part of Honda’s upcoming “Honda 0 Series” EV lineup, will be produced locally in North America, the Nikkei said. Honda has previously stated the 0 Series will debut globally, starting in North America, as part of its broader strategy to transition entirely to battery-powered and fuel-cell vehicles by 2040.

Japan’s second-largest automaker has lagged behind rivals such as Tesla, Volkswagen, and China’s BYD  in EV adoption. The move to introduce a competitively priced EV aligns with Honda’s push to attract cost-conscious consumers, particularly after former U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order rolling back EV promotion policies enacted under the Biden administration.

“The automaker’s objective is to attract new consumers,” the Nikkei report noted, highlighting Honda’s response to shifting regulatory and market dynamics.

Honda’s 2040 target for zero-emission vehicles comes amid intensifying global competition and regulatory pressure to reduce carbon emissions. The company’s delayed entry into the EV segment has prompted renewed efforts to close the gap with competitors through localized production and affordable models.
