Chinese automaker GWM is preparing to launch the ORA 5, a completely new electric hatchback under its ORA brand, later this year, according to filings with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT). The model is the first all-new ORA vehicle since 2022, signaling the brand’s renewed push in the highly competitive Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market.
The ORA 5 features a distinctive retro-modern design with rounded headlights and a low hood, combining classic styling cues with contemporary proportions. The hatchback spans 4,471 mm in length, 1,833 mm in width, 1,641 mm in height, and has a 2,720 mm wheelbase. It weighs 1,540 kg and seats five passengers.

Powering the vehicle is a 150 kW electric motor, capable of a top speed of 170 km/h. Energy is supplied by a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack produced by Honeycomb Energy, a choice that highlights the growing adoption of LFP technology in China’s mid-range EV segment. The combination of motor and battery is expected to offer a balance of performance and range suitable for urban and suburban driving.
The filings indicate that GWM is targeting a fourth-quarter launch for the ORA 5 in China. Analysts note that the model arrives at a time when domestic EV competition is intensifying, with several Chinese automakers introducing new hatchbacks and compact SUVs to capture urban buyers.

The ORA brand has historically focused on small and affordable electric vehicles, but the ORA 5 represents a step up in design sophistication and market positioning. By combining retro styling with modern electric powertrain technology, GWM is aiming to appeal to younger consumers seeking a mix of style, practicality, and affordability.
