Gotion High-Tech has announced new targets for its solid-state battery technology, including an energy density of 400 Wh/kg and a long-term cost target of about US$150 per kWh. The Chinese battery manufacturer, in which Volkswagen is the largest shareholder, presented the targets at the World Manufacturing Convention 2026 in Hefei.
According to CarNewsChina, Gotion’s latest target represents an increase from the 350 Wh/kg energy density previously specified for its sulfide-based solid-state cells. The company has not yet disclosed when the 400 Wh/kg benchmark could be achieved in near-series production cells.
Gotion Targets Higher Energy Density and Lower Costs
Gotion’s new cost target is described as entering the “one-yuan era,” referring to approximately one yuan per watt-hour. This equates to around US$150 per kWh.
The target would still be above current average prices for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells in China, according to media reports.
Gotion’s latest development builds on its previous solid-state battery programme. In 2025, the company commissioned a pilot production line with an annual capacity of 0.2 GWh. Gotion said the all-solid-state cells produced on the line had been integrated into vehicles and tested on public roads.
That generation of cells had an energy density of 350 Wh/kg.
Solid-State Production Plans Advance
Gotion announced in 2024 that it planned to begin small-scale solid-state battery production in 2027 and target mass production by 2030.
The company has since taken further steps toward industrialisation. In March 2026, Gotion finalised the design of a solid-state battery production line with an annual capacity of 2 GWh, according to CarNewsChina.
The planned facility would represent a significant increase over the capacity of the company’s existing pilot line and support the next stage of its solid-state battery development.
Gotion Expands Materials Partnerships
Gotion is also developing its materials capabilities as it works toward commercialising solid-state batteries.
At the beginning of 2026, the company entered into a collaboration with BASF covering high-performance materials for solid-state batteries. The companies said the partnership would focus on technical bottlenecks associated with commercialisation and explore opportunities for a future market launch.
Gotion has also highlighted safety testing of its solid-state cells. The company said its cells produced neither smoke nor flames during puncture and high-temperature tests.
Volkswagen Strengthens Relationship With Gotion
Gotion is one of China’s major battery manufacturers and operates 20 production sites worldwide. According to China EV DataTracker, the company recorded 4.61 GWh of installed battery capacity in August 2026, ranking fifth in the Chinese market.
Volkswagen is Gotion’s largest shareholder and has been expanding its relationship with the Chinese battery manufacturer. The companies are also considering a broader European partnership involving three joint ventures, aimed at strengthening Gotion’s presence in the European battery supply chain.
